General Details About This Contemporary Artwork Acrylic on canvas, 18 in. x 12 in., heavily textured, glossy varnish finish I was commissioned to do this piece for someone who needed a wedding gift for a Texas couple who would be relocating to the state of Washington and needed a nice reminder of back home. I decided to go very loose with my linework to add movement, expression, and texture to this composition of just 3 elements, flag, sky, and bluebonnets. General Details About This Contemporary Bovine Artwork August 26th was a "Mingle with the Artists", Art, Wine, and Refreshments night at Premier Gallery in Flower Mound, Texas. In addition to meeting a lot of nice people and showing several of my contemporary western pop art paintings, I brought along my guitar and played and sang some bluegrass music along with my banjo playing friend Jim Penson. Half way through the evening, a collector from Colorado purchased one of my longhorns. I think "Hombre" is going to enjoy the cooler weather up there. The techniques that I use on this canvas are getting the most attention from gallery viewers. The soft flowing background contrasts with the intensity of the straight-on gaze of the bull and the highly textured linework to give it extra "pop" off the canvas. The "drawing-with-paint" technique creates a texture that invites the viewer to reach out to touch and feel it, which I saw one gallery visitor doing. Hey, that's okay by me! Inspiration Behind This Modern Equine Painting The patchiness and spots of Paint horses reminds me a lot of the markings of the Texas Longhorn cattle that I've painted. My palette for this one was real similar to what I had used for the longhorn bull painting, "Hombre", though I used different brush techniques. Many Paint horses have those icy blue eyes that just captivate you and I hope they do in this painting as well. Inspiration Behind This Modern Equine Painting My fascination with horses developed during my childhood. We lived several years out in the country on the prairies of Central Texas where I was fortunate enough to ride and care for some beautiful quarter horses and ponies. I decided that I would portray this majestic stallion out of his natural environment to accentuate his strength. The ruling stallion who guards his herd of mares, strikes quite a defiant posture out on the prairie. I placed him alone, dramatically lit, against a smooth, dark background to draw attention to his independence. A non-traditional color palette was used to further accentuate his uniqueness. With the size of the canvas, he is actually portrayed larger than life, commanding attention in any room.
